The highlight of the a-shoot was taking it to a local primary school. The moment the kids saw the a-chair, they fell in love with it, and started climbing and jumping all over it. One commenting “It’s like a great big elephant – can we keep it?”

The a-chair was realised at the Royal College of Art. Initially inspired by a ply-wood furniture exhibition at the Design Museum, which lead to researching Frank Gehry’s cardboard furniture, typographic forms and sustainable materials. The a-chair was the end result, hand crafted from over 250 sheets of recycled cardboard and a lot of love. For the a-shoot, we drove the a-chair around London in the back of a van and visited a few friends…

Alan Kitching ran letterpress workshops at the Royal College. He is a typographic genius, with brilliant and imaginative work, who made a great impression on me, so it was a pleasure to photograph him in the chair.

This is my design practice, set up in 2004 after an MA at the Royal College of Art. Here’s a selection of commercial and personal projects from the last decade – covering branding and identity work, to print-making and photography. The majority of my commercial projects have been with cultural organisations, with an emphasis on both digital and print design.

Left is one of my favourite projects – the a-chair – photographed here with the formidable Alan Fletcher, reading his book ‘The Art of Looking Sideways’. He will always be one of my heroes.
